Face-to-Face with the
One-Eyed Beast
Earlier this week I had the
extreme pleasure of being interviewed by Gail Cohn on her
radio show, “Book Talk with Gail.” The show was broadcast
live on AM1620 Radio Sandy Springs Wednesday from
noon-1:00. I was there to talk about my novel, “Edgewise:
An Assignment to Remember” and how I came to write the
book. I’m not new to radio because I co-hosted a
talk-show that aired every Saturday morning last year from
10-11:00, and I have been interviewed on other stations as
well. The difference was that “Book Talk” was “live” while
the other shows were pre-recorded, PLUS I can tell you it is
much different being the guest rather than the host/co-host
on a show.
Another difference was that
“Book Talk” has a web cam so folks tuning into the show
world-wide over the internet could see the two of us in real
time. Of course, this particular web cam only downloads the
image every six seconds so the subjects are viewed in
sequential still shots rather than continuous flowing
movements. I was a little nervous since this was my first
live broadcast, and very conscious about the web cam, or the
“one-eyed beast” as I call it. Those things have a way of
catching their subject’s facial expressions in some pretty
unflattering positions. (Believe me when I say
“unflattering” is the LAST type of position a professional
woman MY age wants the world to see!) So I watched my
posture and sat up straight, making eye contact with the
host, being careful to speak clearly into the microphone,
not to make any faux paux I would later regret. Thank
goodness, Gail Cohn is a most gracious host who, along with
her producer, made me real right at home and helped me
recover from any potential foot in mouth debacles.

What I DIDN’T realize is
that the web-cam runs the entire time, EVEN during the
commercial breaks! In fact, I didn’t realize it until my
dear friend, Angie, who downloaded the still shots and
emailed them to me later that afternoon. Suffice it to say,
there are some shots of me that make my driver’s license
photo look like a Glamour Shot, both during the show as well
as during the breaks! Those who know me rarely see me
without my trusty black and aluminum cup filled with water,
complete with my trademark straw. For those who don’t
know me personally, I will explain that I drink a LOT of
water and I get particularly thirsty when I’m talking,
especially when I’m nervous. So during the break I grabbed
up my cup and sucked the water through that straw like there
was no tomorrow…and the one-eyed monster was right there to
catch me in the act—talk about “unflattering”? Now I’m the
first one to laugh at myself, so I thought I would share the
photo with you as my close and personal friends of the
MyFox5Atlanta community. Go to “My Album” to see it up
close. All I ask is that you remember I am a professional
and that you respect me afterward.
Enjoy a wonderful weekend
and Keep Moving Forward!
